Gout is a type of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden and severe pain, swelling, and redness. It typically affects the toes but can also affect other joints such as the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. It is often associated with high levels of uric acid in the blood and can be triggered by certain foods and drinks, such as red meat and alcohol. Gout is more common in men than in women and can be managed with medications and lifestyle changes.
