Suffolk, VA – High Cholesterol Research Study
Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) is a medical condition characterized by high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a type of fat that the body needs to build cell membranes and produce hormones. However, when there is too much cholesterol in the bloodstream, it can start to accumulate in the walls of the arteries, leading to a condition called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries, which can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. There are two types of cholesterol: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, as it contributes to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, whereas HDL is considered “good” cholesterol, as it helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream.
