Pronouncing the Word “Research”
Hello, I’m Dr. Jeff Kingsley and welcome to another edition of Riding in Cars With Researchers. Today is going to be a quick one. I’m going to talk about the word reSEARCH and why I pronounce it as I do. I frequently have people who will ask me, “why do you pronounce it that way?” Research, if you look it up in the dictionary, you can put the accent on either syllable. It can be reSEARCH or it can be REsearch. Now, in my experience, most people seem to pronounce it REsearch, so why do I choose not to? Why do I choose to put the accent on the second syllable? Well, because that’s what we’re doing. The point of reSEARCH is to search for better cures for better healthcare. It’s the reason we do what we do. The point isn’t the re, it’s the search. And so by putting the accent on the search of research, we continually remind ourselves, yes, that’s why we do what we do. So do me a favor – everybody adopt this. Let’s get everyone calling it reSEARCH because searching is the point of what we’re doing.
Thanks for riding along!
