Types of Diseases Related to Surgery
The term abdominal surgery broadly covers surgical procedures that involve opening the abdomen. Surgery of each abdominal organ is dealt with separately in connection with the description of that organ (see stomach, kidney, liver, etc.). Diseases affecting the abdominal cavity are dealt with generally under their own names (e.g. appendicitis).
Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infection
Intraabdominal infection (IAI) is a group of infections that occur within the abdominal cavity. They vary from appendicitis to fecal peritonitis. Risk of death despite treatment is often high. Complicated intra-abdominal infection, which extends into the peritoneal space, is associated with abscess formation and peritonitis. Uncomplicated infection, which involves intramural inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, may progress to complicated infection if left untreated
